Founded in 1949, the Civil War Round Table of Atlanta was established to further the serious study and discussion of the American Civil War. For more than seven decades, the organization has provided a place for individuals with a shared interest in Civil War history to come together, exchange ideas, and deepen their understanding of one of the most consequential periods in American history.

The Round Table is dedicated to examining the Civil War from a broad historical perspective. Programs and discussions explore the military campaigns and battles of the conflict as well as the political decisions, personalities, social conditions, individual experiences, and events that shaped the era. By presenting a wide range of subjects and perspectives, the organization encourages thoughtful study and a greater appreciation for the complexity of the Civil War and its lasting impact on the nation.

A central part of the Round Table experience is its regular meeting program. Members have the opportunity to hear presentations from respected historians, authors, researchers, educators, preservationists, and other knowledgeable speakers. These programs provide opportunities to discover new areas of study, revisit familiar events through fresh perspectives, and engage in meaningful discussion with others who share an interest in history.

The Civil War Round Table of Atlanta welcomes both longtime students of the Civil War and those who are just beginning to explore the subject. Members come from a variety of backgrounds and bring different areas of interest, from military history and battlefield strategy to biographies, genealogy, preservation, politics, and the experiences of civilians and soldiers alike. What brings the membership together is a common desire to learn, ask questions, and better understand the people and events of the period.

As a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization, the Civil War Round Table of Atlanta remains committed to historical education, scholarship, and the responsible study of the past. Through its programs, resources, and fellowship, the organization continues a tradition that began in 1949 and provides future generations with opportunities to explore, discuss, and better understand the history of the American Civil War.

Our Purpose

The purpose of the Civil War Round Table of Atlanta is to promote the serious study, thoughtful discussion, and greater understanding of the American Civil War and the era in which it occurred.

We seek to provide members with opportunities to explore the conflict in depth through historical research, educational programs, guest speakers, and informed conversation. Our programs examine not only the major battles and military campaigns of the war, but also the political decisions, leadership, social conditions, individual experiences, and broader consequences that shaped the nation before, during, and after the conflict.

The Round Table encourages an approach to history that values accuracy, scholarship, curiosity, and respectful discussion. By bringing together historians, authors, researchers, educators, preservationists, and individuals with a shared interest in the subject, we strive to create an environment where members can continue learning, exchange ideas, and consider the Civil War from a wide range of historical perspectives.

We also recognize the importance of preserving an appreciation for the people, places, documents, and stories that help us understand the past.
